By way of demonstration

On Monday night I finally fell asleep at 4:00 AM and was back on-duty by 6:00 AM. On Tuesday night I finally fell asleep at 4:00 AM and was back on-duty by 6:00 AM. Last night I finally fell asleep at 4:00 AM and was back on-duty by 6:00 AM.

Adrenaline rather than rest is what fuels you, inexplicably, through baby bootcamp (that and plentiful grammies and grampas). By lord, the boy grunts and snorts all night. Trying to sleep in the same room with him is like trying to sleep in the same room with a 600-pound wild boar up to his gizzard in a fieldful of truffles.

After all the trash talking <smile> and pastlife lusting <sigh> of recent posts, you the chosen childfree and yet-to-be-parents must be thinking why in the name of all that’s sensible would anyone choose to procreate? a) wow, am I ever right to wait for senility OR b) wow, am I ever right to politely decline altogether OR c) perhaps I should begin making my intended sperm/egg deposit technician sleep on the couch.

If you really want to know the answer to that most justified of universal questions, you could go here or here.

Or for the short version, you could always watch this.

Boy, is Evan's prom date going to get a show. I'm sure he will treasure this one. Thanks for the a.m. laugh.

My guy who is almost three loves to do the same thing. I can't believe it doesn't leave them with a splitting headache but they love it!

How wonderful .... the laughter.
July 19, 2007 | Unregistered CommenterMrs. Chicken
Oh the laughter, indeed - this is great. I, too, am going on little sleep from last night, as my wonderful husband was away on business. I think I got about 3.5 hours. Boy, does that hurt until you get goin'. Are you managing the boys solo yet? Hugs to you on these days - that video of Evan with you both in the background truly does show how this is all worth it :). Hugs -

The good times do help make up for the bad times. Like Vivian beating the crap out of a 7 year old boy the other day. That was both impressive and funny. That's my girl. :)

Glad things are nice today.
July 19, 2007 | Unregistered Commenterthordora
Thank you for that. This morning I've got a crying 2 yr old and a very talkative 4 1/2 yr old. Laughter is great medicine.

Not to be pushy, but I'd love to have a medical update on Ben. We knew so much about the problems Liam faced, but I feel totally in the dark about what kind of future Ben can look forward to. I remember my sister's tales of bringing home a preemie after two months in the hospital--heart monitors and ringing alarms. I hope that Ben has already left all that behind.

He is so darn cute!!

Oh boy, Kate, that hysterical little video made my ovaries ache! I love the sound of a child's laughter. Hopefully very soon we will be moving from our wine-sipping, bed-frolicking ways to muffin top joy of children! In the meantime, I guess we best enjoy our gluttenous ways!
July 19, 2007 | Unregistered CommenterAndrea
he is such a beautiful kid.
July 19, 2007 | Unregistered CommenterAshley
I remember the grunts....we used to call Thomas the Gruntasaurus. It was impossible to sleep in the same room with him. The first three months were a blur -- an hour of sleep here an hour there. All worth it now.

I love the Evan video! I wish adults were more like small children....easily amused and so much fun to watch. Is Evan eating strawberries in the video?

Mine just turned one this past Friday. They have discovered throwing fits...wow! Just when I feel comfortable something happens to put me back into "what do I do with this?"

@Thordora

Your comment made me queasy. If I'm misreading you, I apologize.

But when it is ever OK for a kid to beat the crap out of another?

I'm pleased that Vivian knows how to take care of herself. Really. I teach Shotokan karate, so I know it's important for kids to know how to defend themselves and avoid physical harm.

And I've been proud of my kids, for standing up for others who were picked on, and for getting themselves out of tricky situations that kids find themselves in every day. Perhaps that's what Vivian was doing, standing up for a friend, or trying to stop a neighborhood bully.

But if I had learned that a karate kid had beaten the sh*t out of another, our class would be smaller, by one student.

Oh sweet Lord, I'm crying with laughter. Kate, I love the videos, post MORE of them! Thank you for acknowledging the dubiousness of the child-free and not-yet (and then neatly rebuffing it).
July 19, 2007 | Unregistered CommenterNorah
This is so funny because my youngest does this. She usually will do it after eating and once she made herself sick. So fun.
July 19, 2007 | Unregistered CommenterJen
Richard-it's amusing because my daughter is not even four yet, and she stood her ground to a 7 year old boy who was trying to boss her around. I'm happy because my girl is not taking any flack from a boy, as MANY girls seem to do when I watch them at the park.

And by beating the crap out of him, I mean elbowing him well out of the way until he gave up to find another victim. In terms of how this bodes well for her future and being able to defend and stand up for herself, I am VERY proud.
July 19, 2007 | Unregistered Commenterthordora
LOL... Thordora... OK, mea culpa.

I'm proud of your daughter too.

Oh lordy, I remember that grunting! I had twin boys too, and got to stay in the hospital in a room when they were in the NICU so I could try to breastfeed.

When they released the first one to sleep in my room, I was so thrilled! But after about the first 4 hours, I was trying to figure out how to sneak him back into the NICU!

I didn't sleep a wink! It does get better though... a bit.

Our little one grunted and groaned all night too...ended up being reflux and having her sleep upright meant a night with MUCH less grunting and groaning!
July 19, 2007 | Unregistered CommenterNancy
Nancy, both of mine have reflux. It took awhile for the meds to kick in....no more grunting.

The few times I tried sleeping with my infant in the same room, all I did was lie there and listen to her breathing, waiting for the next breath (and they were erratic, mixed with grunts and wheezes and other odd noises adults don't make, but makes a mama crazy with "WAS THAT NOISE NORMAL?!" while flying to her side to check her breathing. I gave up and put her in her crib on the other side of the wall from my bed. I knew I would drive myself nuts if I didn't, and would be a total ZOMBIE.

The drool flying was my most favorite part!

Such kooks small people are.
July 19, 2007 | Unregistered CommenterElaine
My Ava was the noisiest of my two babies: grunting, wheezing, sighing. She has reflux but is growing well and is a totally happy baby so we have never done meds for it. The grunting stopped once she could sleep on her tummy (she began rolling over after 4 months). We've all been getting better sleep since then!

Love LOVE the family laughter. It is pure joy at its finest.

Great video! Ahhh, a little brain massage.Does Evan love spinning? My 3 yr old thinks its the best. (has the bruises to prove it)

I like to think that all that late night pre-baby convorting was really great training to surviving on little/no sleep. well, kind of...

Just wait until his little brother is sitting across the table from him in his high chair laughing his diaper off at his silly big brother who he thinks is the coolest thing since cheerios. Pure bliss. :)
I have visions of "The Sandlot" only with Evan and chocolate slobberies flying everywhere. Kiel just blows razberries with his food loaded in his mouth... more messy, not nearly as cute :-)

Your video reminded me that sometimes I forget to take the time from "parenting" to laugh and enjoy the "kid stuff"... Thank you!! So wonderful to laugh, and even more to hear it... from all of you! Maybe those grunts are Ben's way of laughing "haha momma, you only thought you were going to sleep tonight... oh no, instead I want love and cuddles and to see you and hear you"

Did I read above it's your Birthday? Hope it is (or was) a , as Kiel says, beeeee-U-teeful one!

Wow - my son was a snorer and he had reflux too - I had no idea they could be related! We slept with earplugs for the first six months of his life (still not good enough, I have permanent insomnia from then!).

I hope Ben had a decent night last night (right now for you - I hope you're sleeping as I type this!).

I think I dove into Motherhood head first and didn't know if I could ever handle another but seeing this makes me want to take the dive all over again!

my goodness! he must be shaking his brains loose! how can he ever stand that for so long? this has left me dizzy ...but yes, i understand why people choose to procreate. but seriously, did you really imagine it would be like this? did you know?

To me, those pre-kid days only appeal in hindsight. But that's the rule, right?

I wouldn't trade 'em now, not for all the $300 jeans in the world.
July 20, 2007 | Unregistered Commentercarrie
My Bridget (24 months) does the same thing. I tried it once with her, although my overall experience was not quite as pleasant.

What a cute boy he is :-)

Thanks for the birthday wishes.... 34 today. MB: actually a cancer on the cusp of leo, but who's counting... a wee tiny bit of fire on top of hypersensitivity, weepiness and over-fondness for chocolate cookies. That said, I stopped believing in horoscopes when they told me that Justin (aries) and I were doomed. :)

His expressions and movements remind me very much of my Emma. What a sweet child.

And indeed, happy birthday to you. May you joys outweigh everything else for at least today.

happy birthday, kate!! here's to 34 being the best year so far...enjoy it!! may it be filled with peace and light and love.

thanks for the video- you're right, the breathless belly laughs that a 2 year old is capable of inducing is one of the best reasons to not pine away for over priced drinks and resulting hangovers, even in 300 dollar jeans.

*cackles*

At least he wasn't doing that standing up. I can just picture him really getting going and then falling over from the motions taking over, lol. Good to hear the laughter!

Happy birthday! :)

Happy belated birthday Kate!

I love the silliness. My Ben is like that 95% of his waking hours. It's exhausting, but I've never laughed so hard and so much. I don't understand how they can shake their heads like that without keeling over into a faceplant. I'm a bit jealous...looks like fun. Oh to be 2 again...
