Primal pride
Justin looks across the room at a woman who is positively ripping at the seams with pregnancy. Our bellies magnetize together for a quick hello and sure enough, she is due in a week.
Later he says, “I’m so excited for you to be BIG! Like, REALLY big! Did you see that woman? How cool was that?”
Some men covet the perky, buxom-type. A tanned, lithe, yoga babe who can do the splits and wear bias-cut dresses. But for others, the ultimate trophy is a pregnant wife. Check it out, world! I done did progeny! RAWR!
Until recently, Justin kept a cap on his joy for my sake, knowing I was mourning our lack of daughters and overwhelmed with sheer quantity. Are you okay? He’d whisper solemnly, holding my hand.
Then he’d round the corner and squeeze the trigger and punch the air mouthing YEAH! WICKED! I ROCK! I AM THE SPERMINATOR!
...and compose himself just in time for me to come into sight, flipping back to concerned empathy.
But he can only hold it so long. And I have to say, it makes me smile. Only 17 weeks along, turning over in bed already requires a giant shoehorn and a ceiling pulley. And yet, he wants me bigger — because he truly, honestly adores the sight of it.
My boys, he says, cautiously at first. They’re going to be my boys, all piled into the canoe. We’re going to go hunting for frogs and slimy stuff and the shed's going to be full of smelly hockey gear.
I mean, I’d do the same with girls, I would… he adds. But… but they’ll be my boys. I’m so happy. Is that okay?
How could I resist? It’s contagious.

The 'They're going to be my boys, all piled in a canoe.' made me tear up.
This is a fine life you're living, Kate, full of love, goodness and adventure. Your boys, your men, will fill your arms with the best hugs and adore you just as much as you adore them.
2) Girls can have stinky hockey gear and hunt slimy things, too. Equal opportunity! I'm sure you'll delight in all your boys, though.
Enjoy kate-enjoy every second, because reading it is so absolutely lovely.
With love,Brooke
Leigh, that was such a neat way to put it, about the two souls wanting to be in our family enough to be squished in there at the same time.. that made me laugh, and thinking of it that way does make me feel very honoured. Mike, you're absolutely right! Girls can stink just as much (or *almost* as much) as guys. If we had daughters, they'd be elbow-deep in muck and just as happy, too. Touche.
All your comments are so wonderful... Justin's enthusiasm has helped me more than he thought it would, and the same is true to get your perspectives. Smiles and bounty back to you.
I really wanted a boy and now that I have one, I'd be thrilled to have another. I love his lack of fear, his excitement about moving and exploring, and the fact that he might not have to fight the battles that women are still fighting in the workplace. That's given me a lot of comfort lately as I've had a tough time balancing a career with society's expectations of me as a mother.
Congratulations! Enjoy the bigness and the proudness over the bigness! That's really cool. :)
