Primal pride

Justin looks across the room at a woman who is positively ripping at the seams with pregnancy. Our bellies magnetize together for a quick hello and sure enough, she is due in a week.

Later he says, “I’m so excited for you to be BIG! Like, REALLY big! Did you see that woman? How cool was that?”

Some men covet the perky, buxom-type. A tanned, lithe, yoga babe who can do the splits and wear bias-cut dresses. But for others, the ultimate trophy is a pregnant wife. Check it out, world! I done did progeny! RAWR!

Until recently, Justin kept a cap on his joy for my sake, knowing I was mourning our lack of daughters and overwhelmed with sheer quantity. Are you okay? He’d whisper solemnly, holding my hand.

Then he’d round the corner and squeeze the trigger and punch the air mouthing YEAH! WICKED! I ROCK! I AM THE SPERMINATOR!

...and compose himself just in time for me to come into sight, flipping back to concerned empathy.

But he can only hold it so long. And I have to say, it makes me smile. Only 17 weeks along, turning over in bed already requires a giant shoehorn and a ceiling pulley. And yet, he wants me bigger — because he truly, honestly adores the sight of it.

My boys, he says, cautiously at first. They’re going to be my boys, all piled into the canoe. We’re going to go hunting for frogs and slimy stuff and the shed's going to be full of smelly hockey gear.

I mean, I’d do the same with girls, I would… he adds. But… but they’ll be my boys. I’m so happy. Is that okay?

How could I resist? It’s contagious.

have been admiring your blog for weeks now, you write beautifully with such honesty. thanks. boys are delicious, with their grubby little hands and rough and tumble ways as you already know, and yes added bonus they do NOT grow into teenage girls that wind up hating you. :) congrats! and hang in there.

Hee Hee -- you always make me laugh Kate! Go sperminator go! At least your man likes you big -- I'm pretty sure Andre never bought into the whole "look at my big-fat mama" thing!

The 'Sperminator!' made me laugh out loud.

The 'They're going to be my boys, all piled in a canoe.' made me tear up.

This is a fine life you're living, Kate, full of love, goodness and adventure. Your boys, your men, will fill your arms with the best hugs and adore you just as much as you adore them.

My goodness...I'm still reeling, going through the last few months of your posts, catching up. Like you, I sit mouth agape...twins, twins, twins. Wow. Twins.Well, congrats, girlfriend. And here's the thing: I know you can do it. NO doubt in my mind. Doubly blessed, two souls wanted YOU to be their Mama that bad...that they joined up together to experience it. How cool. How overwhelming. How priceless. You goddess Mama...XOXO

Two comments:1) I'm a fan of pregnant women, too. I mean, it stems from my wife's pregnant days -- and not before. I must have picked up something from the supposed "glow".

2) Girls can have stinky hockey gear and hunt slimy things, too. Equal opportunity! I'm sure you'll delight in all your boys, though.

There is something so sweet about your husbands expectation. We never wanted children, so I never had any of this. I always wanted to be guarded and loved AS a pregnant woman, but alas....

Enjoy kate-enjoy every second, because reading it is so absolutely lovely.

I don't know why smelly hockey gear and Justin's sweet sentiments made me cry, but I'm sitting here with teary eyes, relishing his joy and the wonder of the bounty you have in store for you all.

With love,Brooke

Glad you all liked the Justin-as-sperminator bit. :) Thanks for saying hello kristin.. Great to hear from you, and excellent point about the teenage girls!

Leigh, that was such a neat way to put it, about the two souls wanting to be in our family enough to be squished in there at the same time.. that made me laugh, and thinking of it that way does make me feel very honoured. Mike, you're absolutely right! Girls can stink just as much (or *almost* as much) as guys. If we had daughters, they'd be elbow-deep in muck and just as happy, too. Touche.

All your comments are so wonderful... Justin's enthusiasm has helped me more than he thought it would, and the same is true to get your perspectives. Smiles and bounty back to you.

Hockey gear reeks - uggh!

I really wanted a boy and now that I have one, I'd be thrilled to have another. I love his lack of fear, his excitement about moving and exploring, and the fact that he might not have to fight the battles that women are still fighting in the workplace. That's given me a lot of comfort lately as I've had a tough time balancing a career with society's expectations of me as a mother.

Wow- what a wonderful cheering section you have! With such a sweet, supportive daddy as Justin, those 3 boys will have no choice but to grow into amazing, loving men, too. I will be pointing my girls in your sons' direction when the dating age approaches.;)

That's sweet, how nice to hear about fathers being glad about pregnancy! But then again maybe I just needed to stop reading all the stuff about K Fed-Ex. Yeah, that's probably it.

Congratulations! Enjoy the bigness and the proudness over the bigness! That's really cool. :)
