Tomorrow is another day

There’s barf in my hair for the third time tonight. The first two were direct hits. The third was an aftermath rescue. Summoned by croup's hacking gag, I found him drenched and wailing, desperate for solace.

Try as I might, I can’t be stoic. We’re up for the second night of marathon sleeplessness and rocking and shower-running and bed cleaning. He barfs and I blubber. It’s the helplessness, I think. Something’s wrong with him, and I can’t fix it. All I can do to comfort him is smell as vile as he does in solidarity.

This is every mother’s test of mettle: to calm and soothe, be calming and soothing. Yet here I am:  Miss Scarlett, Miss Scarlett, I don’t know nothin’ bout no barfin’ babies!

It's the helplessness, for sure. That awful feeling of powerlessness. The realization that despite the fact that compared to him you have supernatural powers, you just simply can't fix it.

When Erik had to get those stiches back in May, I was more upset than he was.

Oh ya, that feeling is with you probably for the rest of your parenting life!We are going through the toilet training now...and I find it hard not to cry every time he has an accident! *sniff*I have to have more patience! I think Brad has more than me!

*sigh*

Kate - I hope Evan feels better soon. I heard the one good thing about croup is that it doesn't last long... perhaps Evan is setting a record (but I suppose one hour is long with such a yucky sickness). Poor boy, it's bad enough when you know what's happening but when you can't explain that it will pass, it must be torture. Hang in there Kate, Justin and Evan, hopefully the worst is over.
